Cousin Stizz

This Boston MC is far from a Freshman to me personally, but his voice and flow are still relatively new to the game. I’ve been a fan of Stizz since the release of his debut mixtape Suffolk County back in 2015.

Honestly, J.I.D has been one of the most impressive rappers I’ve heard over the last year or two. After just one listen, you’ll hear that the man has serious wordplay skill and the flow cannot be messed with. He recently announced that he had signed to J. Cole‘s Dreamville label and just dropped a project in light of the announcement.

Jazz Cartier

Jazz really is the next star about to pop out of Toronto. His energy alone brings forth a new excitement for the city. Everybody needs to catch Jazz Cartier in concert as soon as you can, as long as you can handle the chaos. He recently won a JUNO Award for his last project Hotel Paranoia for “Rap Recording of the Year.”

“Purity” is the best word I can think of to describe Noname and her music. Her vibe cannot be matched and that carries over into her music. Telefone was truly one of my favorite overall projects last year.

Chicago is currently one of the most exciting cities in music, with help from Chance The Rapper, the female lyricist I spoke about above, and this gentleman Saba. His album Bucket List Project was a favorite in the underground hip hop community last year. If you don’t know his music, you probably heard his verses on the last couple Chance projects, who also gave him a lot of praise for his talent and his last album.

This young man deserves all the praise. His alternative rap sound is ready to blow up on the mainstream level. blkswn has been getting consistent spins on my end after its release last month. If you don’t know Smino, get familiar!

You may not officially know Starrah yet, but you DEFINITELY know MULTIPLE songs she’s written within the last two years. “Fake Love” by Drake and “Needed Me” by Rihanna are just two of the impressive catalogue Starrah has built up to date. I included her on my ‘7 Artists To Blow in 2017’ piece at the beginning of the year and we’re still waiting on the next Starrah original single; I’m sure it will have hit record potential.
